Why are retainers so important?

Retainers are worn after your teeth straightening treatment to help keep your teeth in their new position and prevent them from moving back to where they were before. Teeth can naturally shift over time, so wearing retainers as advised is an essential part of maintaining your results.

There are two main types of retainers available: bonded retainers and removable retainers. Your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable option for you based on your treatment and individual needs.

What retainers do we offer?

  • Bonded retainers

A bonded retainer is a thin stainless-steel wire fixed to the back of your teeth, making it discreet when you smile. As it stays in place at all times, there’s no risk of forgetting or losing it, and it’s easy to maintain with normal brushing and careful cleaning around the wire.

  • Removable retainers

Removable retainers are clear, custom-made appliances that fit snugly over your teeth to keep them in position. They are usually worn full-time for the first few days after treatment, then reduced to night-time wear as advised by your orthodontist.

  • How to look after your retainers

If you have a fixed bonded retainer, your dentist or orthodontist will show you how to clean around it properly. This will include brushing and flossing advice, as cleaning around the wire can be slightly more challenging.

Removable retainers should be cleaned daily. You can gently brush them with a soft toothbrush using liquid soap and lukewarm water or use the cleaning tablets we recommend. Avoid using hot water, as this can damage the retainer.

  • How much do retainers cost?

The cost of your retainer(s) is included within the overall cost of your orthodontic treatment and will be clearly outlined in your personalised treatment plan. You will receive your retainer or retainers at the end of your teeth straightening treatment.
